Academic
Excellence Indicator System report. West Ward Elementary School, built
in 1948, has gone through several renovations over the years. There have been
four additions to the original building, the last in the 1994 fall semester.
The original building was well maintained and updated as needed, a school official
said.
The school has 80 computers and every classroom has at least one, a
school official said. West Ward Elementary School has one curriculum-based computer
lab and one special education reading lab. Most computers are connected to the
Internet.
Playground facilities include a large playground divided between
kindergarten and first graders, and second and third graders. Each playground
has age-appropriate equipment, a school spokesperson said. The parent teacher
association assisted with the development of the school playgrounds and helps
maintain the playground equipment.
The parent teacher association at West
Ward is "very active," according to a school official, with about 200 parents
regularly attending meetings and organizing school-related events.
Among its
unique features, West Ward hosts a Drop Everything and Read program every year.
Other events include, a Grandparents Lunch, a Parents Lunch, as well as Donuts
for Dad and Muffins for Mom meetings. The school also hosts four parent teacher
association meetings, which involve students setting goals for parents.
The
school also provides computer classes for parents, and maintains a library.
