Constructed in 1957, Smylie Wilson Junior High School includes
40 classrooms, four science labs and two gymnasiums. The campus
also includes a band hall, a choir hall, two computer labs,
a video production lab, art room facilities, home economics
kitchens, an industrial technology lab and an arena.
The school's cafeteria and gymnasiums have been remodeled,
and the courtyard of the campus has been renovated into a teaching area. Recent
updates include the addition of a building-wide sound system and a trophy case.
Internet-accessible computers are available in every classroom as well as
in computer labs. Many classrooms are equipped with multiple computers for student
use. Windows machines are primarily utilized, but Macintosh computers also are
available in some classrooms.
The school is the host for the Region 17 Education
Service Center's Junior High Regional Deaf Educational Program, and is a pilot
school for the Lubbock Independent School District's Channel One and Direct TV
programs. The school is equipped with a video production lab.
Wilson offers
a TAAS Pullout tutorial program, and students are given opportunities twice a
year to participate in community service programs. Wilson students participate
in a school-wide recycling program, and students take part in Hoops for Hearts,
Angel Tree, March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock Up, United Way
activities, Pennies for Pasta and the U-Can-Share Food Drive each year.
Students
may participate in a variety of musical programs, including boys or girls choir,
mixed choir, orchestra, band or jazz band.
The Texans compete in football,
volleyball, basketball, track, wrestling and swimming.
Youth Alive, Fellowship
of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club, Science Club and Home Economics Club are
among activities available to students.
Parents may participate in Band Boosters
and Texan Athletic Boosters. The school offers Parent Technology Education classes.
Annual events include a String Fling, a spaghetti supper, a Mr. SCW Pageant
and a Dr Seuss' Birthday Celebration.
The school has a mentor program -- Time
After Time Commitment -- and the largest ninth grade Parent Teacher Association
in the school district.
