Academic
Excellence Indicator System report.
Cavazos,
built in 1993, is comprised of 38 classrooms, four computer labs, a writing lab,
an industrial technology lab and workshop, a spacious library that includes a
student workroom, an auditorium, two gymnasiums, an all purpose weight room, two
tennis courts, practice football and track fields complete with spectator bleachers,
a band hall complete with practice rooms, a choir room and practice rooms, six
science labs, a cafeteria and a snack bar with an adjoining patio.
The administration
continues to upgrade and reutilize the building to accommodate the needs of the
students, according to one school official.
The school provides at least four
computers in each classroom. Some classrooms have as many as eight computers.
Cavazos operates four computer labs, used for technology instruction and technology
integration into all curricula. The school also provides a writing lab housing
networked computers used for writing instruction and computer-aided instruction
in math and social studies.
All the school computers are Internet-ready except
those in the writing lab. The computers are networked to enhance the writing software.
The school has approximately 300 computers available for student use, including
Dell, IBM, and Macintosh computers.
Football, volleyball, basketball, tennis,
wrestling, and track programs are components of the school sports program.
Cavazos also offers band, choir, orchestra and piano instruction.
Students
enjoy field trips to Carlsbad Caverns and Fluvanna. A highlight for Cavazos ninth
graders is a three-day technology trip to Austin, Houston, Dallas or San Antonio.
Students perform in a variety of concerts and talent shows, and the school
has a recognition assembly to honor outstanding students in all academic areas.
After-school programs include Intercambios and PEACE.
The Intercambios
program uses technology to provide learning experiences for students outside the
classroom. Students participate in Internet projects using simulation software
or creating their own computer-based projects. Tutors are available to help with
homework.
The PEACE program offers activity-based classes for students after
school. Typical PEACE classes include guitar, golf and wrestling instruction.
Often, guest speakers are invited to Cavazos to broaden the students' experience.
Cavazos is a technology magnet school.
Classes include Piano Lab & Progressive
Piano; Media Literacy, Critical Viewing and Advanced Media Literacy; Electronic
Media (computer art) and Advanced Electronic Media. Leadership, communications,
and Cavalier Leadership programs are stressed. Computer Explorations/Computer
