Excellence Indicator System report. Built in 1956, Wheatley Elementary
School is comprised of 23 regular classrooms and an art room, a computer lab,
a music room, a science lab, a gymnasium, a library and an early literacy room.
During the last 1990s, the office and nurse's area have been renovated and the
gymnasium and library have been added.
Using grant money, printers and Internet-ready
computers are being installed in every classroom and the campus is being wired
for connection to the information superhighway.
Students at Wheatley participate
in a host of activities during the school year, including events designed to increase
diversity and multicultural learning. Those activities include the African-American
History Celebration, the Black History Bowl, a Spelling Bee, a poetry contest,
Kids Voting and Cinco de Mayo. Throughout the year students participate in Honor
Club, Kids of Character Club, the Wheatley Ambassadors program and the drill team.
A display at the state capitol includes artwork created by Wheatley students.
Families and community are integrated into the learning process at Wheatley.
More than 26 businesses have adopted the school and sponsor field trips to places
such as the Science Spectrum and Texas Tech basketball games. Parents are involved
in activities such as Boy's Night Out, Monday Night Football, Mother's Day Tea
and Muffins with Dad Day.
The Wheatley Parent Teacher Association is affiliated
with the state parent teacher association and national parent teacher association.
