Academic
Excellence Indicator System report.
The
name of Wester Elementary School honors the memory of J.K. Wester, superintendent
of Lubbock public schools from 1910 to 1914. Built in 1967, the most recent renovations
took place in 1997, when 12 classrooms were added and the gymnasium was connected
to the main building.
Each classroom has four computers, and students have
access to two computer labs. Internet access is available on computers in one
of the computer labs and in the library. By the start of the 2001-2002 school
year, every classroom at Wester will be wired for connection to the Internet.
Students have access to both Windows and Macintosh computers.
School officials
describe Wester as a unique campus with exemplary teachers and staff and a child-center
academic program. Students publish a school newspaper in collaboration with parents,
community members and business partners. Students also may take advantage of an
art club offered after school.
Community and business partners are bought
into classrooms to make presentations to students, and parents volunteer to assist
teachers in their classrooms. Through the Wester Parent Teacher Association, many
parents contribute time to their children's education.
Special events held
at the school include a back-to-school picnic, a fall festival, a monthly skating
party, a monthly family pizza night, parenting classes, chuck wagon lunches and
Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.
