Excellence Indicator System report.
Built
in 1966, Tubbs Elementary School is a communications and technology magnet school.
The building has been renovated twice. Additions have included 11 classrooms,
a gymnasium, a library, a computer lab and an expanded cafeteria. All classrooms
are self-contained.
Strong emphasis is placed on computer-assisted learning
and technology at Tubbs. In addition to having two or three computers in every
classroom, students have access to two computer labs, a computerized reading lab
and a broadcast journalism lab. There are 132 computers on campus, with units
in classrooms, the library office and a computer office. All are connected to
the Internet.
Twelve Macintosh computers are used in the reading lab. A multi-media
lab used by students in kindergarten through second grade is equipped with 24
Macintosh computers, while there are 24 Windows computers in a computer lab used
by students in the third through sixth grades. The two computer labs, computerized
reading lab and broadcast journalism lab are housed together in a four-room pod.
The school also has a complete computerized library system with access to the
Texas Library Connection.
Students in kindergarten through the sixth grade
may take advantage of Spanish instruction, and technology is integrated into core
subject areas. The building is wired to provide broadcast capabilities in every
classroom.
The parent teacher association, which enjoys the support of many
parents, hosts book fairs during the school year. The organization also conducts
fund-raisers and provides volunteer support to teachers and administrators. The
parent teacher association provided funds for the school's stage and primary play
area.
Special events held each year include health and safety fairs, Earth
Day, Technology Night, Young Authors Day, A Read-A-Thon, Play Day and an Accelerated
Point Fair. Parents participate with students in Moms-and-Muffins, Dads-and-Donuts
and Kindergarten Literacy Reading Day.
