Ramirez
Elementary School is a Science and Technology magnet school located in the heart
of Lubbock. The school is a literacy-based campus that emphasizes literacy from
kindergarten through sixth grade.
The curriculum begins with an Early Literacy
program in kindergarten through second grade. Students in grades K-2 also have
the advantage of the Reading Recovery program -- a comprehensive short-term, one-to-one
reading program.
Established in 1986, Ramirez is one of the district's newer
facilities, and is one of the largest elementary schools in the school district.
Ramirez has a combination cafeteria/gymnasium/auditorium, and an additional
gymnasium for physical education.
In keeping with the age of technology, Ramirez
has computers in classrooms and two computer labs, and all computers are Internet-ready.
The school boasts five computers per classroom and the computer labs each have
20 computers. The school uses Dell computers, according to a school official.
Parental involvement through the parent teacher association and parent-volunteer
programs is "very active throughout the year," and is instrumental in furthering
educational activities and school celebrations, one school official said.
Ramirez celebrates student success, excellent attendance and cultural holidays
throughout the year.
The school is ranked a Professional Development School
by the district and, as such, works in close conjunction with local universities
in staff training, and conducting research to improve its curricula.
