Excellence Indicator System report.
Forty
years after Bayless Elementary School was constructed, a gymnasium and eight classrooms
were added to the original building in 1996. The campus now includes 40 classrooms
that are used for kindergarten to sixth grade classes, three special education
rooms, two computer labs, a library and the gymnasium. The school also has an
outdoor learning center with a mini-amphitheater that was constructed with funds
donated by parent teacher association members.
At Bayless, a self-contained
classroom structure is used for students in kindergarten through the fourth grade.
A departmentalized structure is used for students in the fifth and sixth grades.
Parent teacher association meetings and activities are held regularly, and
the parent teacher association board meets monthly. The parent teacher association
conducts fund-raisers during the year, and parent volunteers assist teachers regularly.
Early Literacy meetings are held each semester and parenting classes are offered
throughout the year.
Students have access to two computer labs with 50 computers
-- 24 Macintoshes and 26 Windows machines. The labs serve all grade levels with
sixth-grade students attending the labs twice each week. Most classrooms have
Accelerated Reader computers as well as a computer each teacher can use as a teaching
tool. Students also have access to two computers in the library. All computers
are connected to the Internet.
The Early Literacy Program has been implemented
for students in kindergarten through the third grade. The program includes guided
reading and interactive writing. Teachers also offer daily Texas Assessment of
Academic Skills tutoring and for some groups, as well as after school Texas Assessment
of Academic Skills tutorials. Second and fourth grade students participate in
the Safety City program, and third grade students participate in a water safety
program at the Aquatic Center.
Student activities include the Junior Committee
for Tech, Student Council, honor choir, orchestra and honor orchestra, and a cross-country
track team. First Bank and Trust is a student-operated, student investor bank
that is open for business on Thursdays. Y-Care is offered as an after-school program.
Students participate in Kids Voting, Destination of Imagination, Accelerated
Reading, and the Spelling Bee. Bayless students have placed in the top three in
the African-American History Bowl for the past three years. Other student activities
include Awards Day, Honor Roll recognitions, Student-of-the-Month recognitions,
Adopt-A-School, Campus Beautification, Project Pride, and Natural Helpers.
Students, staff, and parents assist with a variety of charitable programs.
