Academic
Excellence Indicator System report. Academic excellence is paramount at
Frenship High School, where more credits are required to graduate than at many
area schools, according to school officials. The school is part of the Frenship
Independent School District, which is one of seven districts in the state to achieve
exemplary status from the Texas Education Agency. Approximately 70 percent of
Frenship High School graduates go to colleges, universities or technical schools.
However, it is not all work and no play at the school, which competes in football,
baseball, volleyball, cross-country running, softball and golf. The Tigers made
it into the state playoffs in football in 2000.
Technology plays a major role
in academic life at the school, which has three mobile wireless labs, multiple
computer labs and televisions in 75 percent of classrooms. Parents also have access
to the school's technology through an interactive website that allows them to
check a child's homework, grades, schedule, attendance and discipline. The site
also allows parents to send e-mail to teachers.
Constructed in 1981, Frenship
High School has undergone major renovation projects as the student population
has escalated. Additions were made in 1995 and 1997, when a freshman wing with
84 classroom was added.
South Plains College instructors teach economics,
government and tech-preparation classes at the school and a health sciences program
provided by the college allows students to receive emergency medical training.
In addition to sports, extracurricular activities include band, choir, theater,
debate and participation in the National Honor Society. The choir has performed
at Carnegie Hall in New York and will perform in Australia in 2001.
Students
learn civic responsibility at Frenship High School. The Student Council sponsors
drug-awareness events and provides students with service opportunities through
Toys for Tots, Ronald McDonald charities, the South Plains Food Bank and the Lubbock
Women's Shelter.
