Academic
Excellence Indicator System report. Crestview Elementary School opened
in 1989. With enrollment growth, officials saw a need to expand. Three years ago,
the administration added a gymnasium and a fine arts area to the facility.
The school has computers in every classroom, Internet access and instructional
labs. Cordless telephones in each classroom enhance the school's ability to maintain
an ongoing relationship with its students' parents.
Crestview, like its sister
elementary school, Casey, provides advanced English instruction using computer
applications.
The school encourages students to utilize technology, and has
a wireless laptop computer lab capable of monitoring computer use to show the
student how much time he or she spends using computers.
The school's playground
facilities include swings, soccer goals, a baseball backstop, a running track,
a jungle gym and sliding boards.
The parent teacher association, which meets
monthly, is vibrant at Crestview, according to school officials.
Each year,
the school sponsors special events such as Buddy Day -- a competition involving
physical and computer games. Kindergarten and first-grade students are helped
through the competition by third and fourth-graders, creating an atmosphere of
peer support at the school.
An accelerated reader program awards students
who meet their reading goals with the "Reader Celebration Award," each year.
As part of the award ceremony, the principal dresses in a costume selected by
students. According to school officials, this year the principal will dress as
Elvis Presley, but last year Principal James Vardy dressed as Cinderella, showing
a commitment beyond traditional duty.
Each year, Crestview students compete
in "Destination Imagination," a state competition involving problem solving.
The school has an unusual program for elementary schools. "We have our own TV
station, 'KROC' (Kids Reporting On Crestview)," said Vardy. "Every morning the
students report on the news, weather, lunch menu and things of this sort."
