Built in 1935, Casey Elementary School has had major renovations within the last three years, including the addition of a new office, a nurse station, as well as a new heating and air conditioning unit with dedicated thermostats for each room.

Despite its more than 50 years of service, Casey has kept abreast of teaching innovations and moved into the 21st Century, well equipped to train students for high-tech jobs.

The school has four computers in every classroom, open access and instructional computer labs for students and cordless telephones in each room, which are used to keep parents informed of their child's progress.

In keeping with the school's commitment to innovation, a wireless laptop computer lab will be added in 2002.

The school playground includes swings, jungle gyms and sliding boards, all on a sand foundation.

The parent teacher association is very active, according to school officials, and membership is free of charge.

Casey sponsors a Playday competition between grades each year. The school also provides an Accelerated Reader program. Through the accelerated reader curriculum, students are given incentive points to read books, which can be traded for items available in the school's accelerated reader store.

Students acquire points by reading a book, then testing their comprehension and understanding of the topic using a computer program designed to measure reading skills. The accelerated reader program helps chart students' progress in reading skills, and gives them an opportunity to purchase fun merchandise using the points they accrue from the test.

The school also provides a Character Counts program, designed to keep students sensitive to character issues, such as honesty and fairness.
